Day 1 – Clinical rotation at Hospital Ramon Garibay.
Today was the very first day of our clinical rotation in the
hospital. I was a little nervous because I had absolutely no idea what to
expect. I am not sure how to describe the hospital, all I can say is that it
was extremely unlike any hospital I have ever been in. Tomorrow I will add more
pictures of the outside and hopefully of the inside if I am permitted to.

First we had a chance
to see the medical interns present their patients cases in front of about 8
doctors and other medical interns. This was pretty intimidating for them because
the doctors would drill them on their assessment of the patient and although I
don’t quite understand a whole lot of Spanish I could definitely see that by
discomfort in the intern’s body language and tone of voice that things were not
going well. Next, we had a short tour of the 27 room hospital in which we saw the
surgery area, men’s area, women’s area, the emergency room, the pharmacy,
radiology, and the laboratory. Oh and I almost forgot the cafeteria. The whole
tour probably took less than 20 minutes. Then I was assigned for the first 3
days to sala de hombres ward, which is the room of men. Only men are in this
area, #1 difference between here and the US. I had absolutely NO patients
today, not one! The room only has three beds in it. Outside of the room is a
nurse’s station and small prep area. I ended up with one of the other girls
searching for someone to speak to. We were lucky enough to have a conversation
with two of the doctors. I was simply amazed at how team oriented the doctors
and nurses were, #2 difference. Towards the end of our day, I was able to see
an assessment and small procedure done by the ER doctor in the ER room. I
enjoyed the time spent in there because it gave me a chance to hear how an
assessment and procedure is verbalized in Spanish.
I will talk about the
weekend tomorrow. My finals for my grammar and medical Spanish course are
tomorrow afternoon and I have just a few more things that I want to brush up
on!!
Getting My Studying Done |
One thing that I always have to remember with nursing is –
Teamwork is the key to success.
Favorite Spanish sentence of the day – Cuales son sus
sintomas? – A question that I may need to know for tomorrow’s exam….I’ve got it
now. – What are your symptoms?
