Day 9 - en los médicos clases de español.
Well as you all know yesterday was the 4th of
July, the Celebration of American Independence. Larissa, Heather, Jorge and I
decided to go down to El Centro and view El Catedral en la noche (the night). Then
we went to a quaint outdoor patio dining restaurant, listened to live music and made a toast to our independence.
El Catedral looked amazing in the evening sky. There were so many people
sitting and walking around the plaza and fountain. I am truly astounded at how
many people I see hanging out and relaxing in the plaza, it is not a common
activity done by Americans, because we always seem to be on the go and we
rarely take the time to just sit and unwind. In Mexican culture, they believe
in taking a moment to rest, Siestas.

Today we learned more about how to communicate with patients
and wrote up sentences about what a patient or a nurse would do or say in various
medical situations. I am really beginning to understand how to write in Spanish,
now if I could only figure out how to speak it as well!! I will get there, but
it will take some time. The girls and I joke that we just need one more month
here and we would being doing good and in 6 more months we would be completely
fluent. I don’t think my husband would go for that one!! LOL
In la cultura clases, we learned about how Mexican culture
favors homepatia medicina. The use herbal plants to prevent or cure illnesses
is a common practice in the the Mexican culture. Maestra Alicia said that when
she went to the doctor, he recommended that she take an herbal supplement to
help in lowering her blood pressure. In American culture the doctors are quick
to prescribe a chemically based substance. It is not common for a doctor to
tell you to take, for example, Valerian Root or Chamamile for insomnia. It is
more common for them to tell you to go and get Ambien.
One thing that I
always have to remember with nursing is – Homepathia medicina
Favorite Spanish sentence of the day – El paciente necesita
un yeso para una fractura de la pierna. This is one of the sentences that I wrote
up for medical Spanish practice. – The patient needs a cast for the fracture of
the leg.
